A Coffee House with a Salon Culture
As an urban coffee house with the flair of a grand café of international claim, the Cafe Luitpold has presented itself in the heart of Munich since September 2010. With new architecture, new evening gastronomy, a new cultural program and a new appearance, the focus has consciously been placed on the strengths of this place rich in tradition, emphasize Dr. Stephan Meier, the new tenant of the café, and Tina Schmitz, the managing director of the Luitpold group.
Upon the opening of this royal "Café and Restaurant Luitpold" in January 1888, Munich hosted one of the largest coffee houses in Europe, in the style of the times. Overnight, the cafe-restaurant enjoyed legendary fame because of its impressive spaciousness and elaborate background scenery of exquisitely designed rooms, halls and corridors. Artists such as Stefan George and Frank Wedekind were regular guests here and soon thereafter, the most famous dance orchestras in Europe played there.
As of June 2009, Dr. Stephan Meier, master baker and pastry chef, is the new tentant and runs Café Luitpold. The owner of master Bakery Meier in Starnberg, has now fulfilled his life dream with the aquistion of his own coffee house.
The architechtural firm Demmel and Hadley, brought in AICHINGER architect Reinhard Meisel, for the extensive renovations. And much of AICHINGER "know-how" has been put into the stylish bar and counter fittings. First class workmanship and quality materials make it the centerpiece of the café. The timeless and support free ARTline-glass showcase glass tops, blend harmoniously into the historic and carefully restored rooms. The central and distinctive bar and counter furnishings in the main room are thus divided into the sales area and the café area.
In the area between the bar and the vestibule, there is a lively tension between the old and the new. The curved shaped forms, guide the guests from the street into the rounded gardens, which architechturally remain unchanged. The natural stone fascade has been extensively refurbished so that it looks exactly as it did in 1888. The red seating in the outer area has been rebuilt after the the original historical model of the 30s and allow the old traditions of the café come back to life!
